This retro gaming dad is a strong contender for father of year.

Game developer Mike Mika used his hacking smarts to transform his daughter's favourite retro game Donkey Kong into something a little more to her liking.

"She's played as Princess Peach in Super Mario Bros 2 and naturally just assumed she could do the same in Donkey Kong," he said on Facebook.

When she realised she couldn't play as the female character, she was so "bummed out" that Mika switched the roles of Mario and Pauline — who is kidnapped by Donkey Kong — so that she could rescue the iconic Italian plumber instead.

This is one parenting win for the ages.
